“SEAMEO at its Best.”

South East Asian Ministers of Education Organization or SEAMEO is a program that offers unforgettable experiences for the students. This program has its motto “ Leading Through Learning.” They lead participating countries to learn different cultures, tradition , beliefs and lifestyles and embrace diversity by Learning and experiencing it. Students who participate are given the opportunity to represent their country.

Being able to participate in this program is indeed a great opportunity for me to experience how the life in other country was, and also by this program I am able to learn new things and have a deeper understanding about individual differences.

Also in the program that I’ve participated, SEA Teachers Program, it makes  me see the beauty of Multi-Cultural Education. This program deepens my understanding about diversity.

I can proudly say that “SEAMEO is at its BEST. “

IV. Teaching Practice

1.1 Procedures of Teaching

Just like the other teachers, I also prepare everything before entering a classroom. Because I know that if you come prepared you will be able to deliver your lesson much better.

Greeting the students , followed by Introducing myself as their temporary teacher are the first move I did to start the class. I also ask the students to introduce their selves as well.

Then, I did some motivational activities for the students to be more interested in the lesson. I used lecture Discussion method, Recalling method and Collaboration method on Teaching. In addition using assessment tools are also part of my teaching strategies for me to know if they learned something from the lesson.

1.2 Time management and organizing activities

Time is gold” they say, so I always make my time inside the classroom more fruitful. I follow what are written on my lesson plan to avoid wasting time. As I do that , I look to it that I don’t pressure my students while I’m teaching and doing our activities instead, I urge to see them enjoying their time my class.

1.3 Problem-Solving

Just like any other exchange student-teachers problem, Language barrier is my ultimate hindrance in teaching. Using our universal Language, which is English, is not enough to teach the students, for the reason that not every one of them understands it. So what I did is, I use Google translate to communicate better with the students and I use it as my medium of instruction while teaching. I also studied some basic Bahasa words and phrases in order to talk freely without using Google translator.

1.4 Classroom management

I didn’t have problem dealing with the students even though I don’t have a human translator, beside from the students being noisy there is no other problem. I personally didn’t enforce house rules or classroom rules but I just ask for their cooperation and help as I try to use their language as our medium of instruction.

6. Summary and suggestions

1.2 Purposes of practicum

The main purpose of this practicum is to train South East Asian Student-Teachers to be more sensitive and flexible. Sensitive because students are diverse so we need to understand that respecting and embracing every ones differences as a teacher is a big factor to help the learners appreciate each other. Another is being flexible, you need to adapt to the place and to the people where you are assigned to.

This SEA Teachers program helps students and teachers to realize the beauty of Multicultural Education.

Experience is the best Teacher.” With the help of this SEA Teachers program, this saying is once again proven true and effective.

It is indeed one of the best things this program has shown to me. This made me realized that as a teacher there are lots of things I should consider, like being more sensitive, and Flexible. This program opens my mind to see the beauty in diversity.

Language Barrier is one of the most common challenges, Exchange students are encountering. It was also the challenged I have accepted as a South East Asian Teacher.

I am not given a chance to have my Human Translator that is why, struggle is real for me. But with the help of Google Translator I still managed to teach and do my lesson plans. The students also help me to pronounce the words correctly while I teach. So I really don’t consider it as a problem but learning challenged. Moreover, the students and I are enjoying helping each other.

  • South East Asian Teachers program highlighted the aesthetics of Multi-cultural education.
  • This program broadens my knowledge about the Indonesian Culture, Lifestyle, Tradition, Foods and Educational System.
  • This program makes me more resourceful and flexible as a teacher.
  • This program allows us to experience how the life in other country was.

To the education system, I suggest that the students should be more taught and trained to communicate with the English language.

The Library and Laboratories are the main academic support of the school to the students. The Free WiFi are also considered to be academic support for the students, for the reason that whenever the students have to search, they can easily access it. Furthermore, Student teachers also use some space at the Library as the place where they can stay and collaborate with other student teachers.

” The place where Student teachers can be seen.”

C. Teaching System

The teachers at SMP Laboratorium have to be in school 8 hours daily from Monday to Friday. The time they only have to spend is 45 minutes in teaching and the rest 15 minutes is for the students break. From Monday to Thursday they focus on the academic learning of the students, and on Friday they focus more on Physical Education . Every Friday morning, from 6:00 – 7:00 in the morning they have “Jalan Santai” which is morning walk and “Senam”, the zumba. These activities alternates with each other.

In a week the teachers have to spend 40 hours in school. But each teacher have different teaching time. Since every teacher have their individual time in teaching, it also depends on the time allotted to the subjects they teach.

D. Materials and other Learning Resources

The main learning resource of the teachers are books. Teachers have their module while each students have their books. The good thing about the teachers here at SMP Laboratorium is that they don’t just rely in one learning resource .They also refer to the internet for additional information and also to gain some new techniques and methods in teaching.

E. Measurement and Evaluation System

For the over all students of the SMP laboratorium Undiksha,
the school uses Traditional Assessment.

Upon observing, the school uses online examination to evaluate the learning of the grade 9th students and to monitor if they are able to go to the next level, which is the senior high school level. The test questions are from the government so whenever they have examination, the WiFi at the laboratories are being turned off and mobile phones aren’t allowed inside . To avoid any linkages of information.

F. Curriculum

The SMP laboratorium of Undiksha has 2 curriculums. For grade 7 and 8 they use the K-13 curriculum. While, for the grade 9 students they use KTSP or the Kurikulum Tingat Satuan pendidikan 2006.

The curriculum 2013 is the revision of KTSP ( Kurikulum Tingat Satuan Pendidikan), which is Educational Unit Level Curriculum 2006 in English.

KTSP 2006 (Kurikulum Tingat Satuan Pendidikan), and Curriculum 2013 is a student centred curriculum. The focus of it is the development of students potential and their needs in present and future. Moreover, the focal points of these two curriculums are to prepare the students into real life situations. However, it is not only about the students but also the teachers.

In this curriculum, teachers are expected to be more competent and creative in teaching. For the reason that it will be a big help to induce the students interest for learning.

G. Teaching Plan

My cooperating teacher makes sure that he has his daily lesson plan, In Bali they call it “Learning Plan.” His lesson plan is very detailed. Everything that he will do is written on his lesson plan. For him his lesson plan is indeed his guide in teaching.  This is good as a teacher. It characterizes him as an efficient and logical Educator.

My major is Technology and Livelihood education and one of its component is Information Communication and Technology, which is TIk in Bahasa . “Teknologi Informasi dan komunikasi.” My cooperating teacher isn’t really good in speaking in English, but I can say that when it comes to teaching computer techniques and applying it he is one of the best.

II. Pedagogical Contents

A. Teaching Methods of the Teacher that you observed

As for me, when I hear or read the word Pedagogy it means “the method and practice of teaching.” It is the study of how knowledge and skills are exchanged in an educational context.

Based on my observation in SMP Laboratorium Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, they are average when it comes to teaching methodologies. They don’t lack nor excel that much.

In my observation, They are Teacher-centered on SMP Laboratorium Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. Since, most of the teachers use Lecture-Discussion Method, as it is classified being Teacher- Centered Education. The students put all of their attention on their teacher and exclusively listen. Beside, only the teacher provides the information and impart knowledge in the class.

The learners feel dull when it comes to classroom discussion, for the reason that the teacher use this method almost everyday.

B. Their Learning Materials and innovation

As I observed, the teachers are using Technology as their main Learning materials. They use PowerPoint presentation, especially in Information, communication and technology class, Which is TIK (Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi) in Bahasa. Their facilities are modernized and are easily accessed by the students. Their computer laboratories has also WiFi connections that are used by the students and teachers .

C. Sources of Learning and Technology used by the Teachers

Teachers have their book as their main resource in learning and they also acquire additional knowledge from the internet. They don’t just depend in one resource of learning. They are flexible in using the other resources they have. For instance is the WiFi, the teachers has a free and stable access to it.

D. Authentic Assessment used by the Teachers

Base from my cooperating teacher, Students should always have their assessment after the discussion of lesson for them  to know if the students have learned something. My cooperating teacher usually use Summative assessment.

III. Teaching Plan

A. Curriculum

The Sekolah Menengah Pertama Laboratorium is using Kurikulum ( Curriculum) 2013. That are widely used in almost all schools in Indonesia.

B. Teaching plan related to your major

They say that ” Lesson Plan is the Blueprint of a teacher.” So every teacher should have it . Lesson plan acts as teachers guide in teaching.

As I’ve said earlier my cooperating makes sure that he has lesson plan before teaching. As a Student Teacher, I also do my lesson plan, but I try to implement their style and method in writing lesson plan.
