IV. Teaching Practice

1.1 Procedures of Teaching

Just like the other teachers, I also prepare everything before entering a classroom. Because I know that if you come prepared you will be able to deliver your lesson much better.

Greeting the students , followed by Introducing myself as their temporary teacher are the first move I did to start the class. I also ask the students to introduce their selves as well.

Then, I did some motivational activities for the students to be more interested in the lesson. I used lecture Discussion method, Recalling method and Collaboration method on Teaching. In addition using assessment tools are also part of my teaching strategies for me to know if they learned something from the lesson.

1.2 Time management and organizing activities

Time is gold” they say, so I always make my time inside the classroom more fruitful. I follow what are written on my lesson plan to avoid wasting time. As I do that , I look to it that I don’t pressure my students while I’m teaching and doing our activities instead, I urge to see them enjoying their time my class.

1.3 Problem-Solving

Just like any other exchange student-teachers problem, Language barrier is my ultimate hindrance in teaching. Using our universal Language, which is English, is not enough to teach the students, for the reason that not every one of them understands it. So what I did is, I use Google translate to communicate better with the students and I use it as my medium of instruction while teaching. I also studied some basic Bahasa words and phrases in order to talk freely without using Google translator.

1.4 Classroom management

I didn’t have problem dealing with the students even though I don’t have a human translator, beside from the students being noisy there is no other problem. I personally didn’t enforce house rules or classroom rules but I just ask for their cooperation and help as I try to use their language as our medium of instruction.

6. Summary and suggestions

1.2 Purposes of practicum

The main purpose of this practicum is to train South East Asian Student-Teachers to be more sensitive and flexible. Sensitive because students are diverse so we need to understand that respecting and embracing every ones differences as a teacher is a big factor to help the learners appreciate each other. Another is being flexible, you need to adapt to the place and to the people where you are assigned to.

This SEA Teachers program helps students and teachers to realize the beauty of Multicultural Education.

1.3 OUTCOMES OF THE PRACTICUM

Experience is the best Teacher.” With the help of this SEA Teachers program, this saying is once again proven true and effective.

It is indeed one of the best things this program has shown to me. This made me realized that as a teacher there are lots of things I should consider, like being more sensitive, and Flexible. This program opens my mind to see the beauty in diversity.

1.4 THE CHALLENGES OF PRACTICUM

Language Barrier is one of the most common challenges, Exchange students are encountering. It was also the challenged I have accepted as a South East Asian Teacher.

I am not given a chance to have my Human Translator that is why, struggle is real for me. But with the help of Google Translator I still managed to teach and do my lesson plans. The students also help me to pronounce the words correctly while I teach. So I really don’t consider it as a problem but learning challenged. Moreover, the students and I are enjoying helping each other.

1.5 OVERALL IMPRESSION

  • South East Asian Teachers program highlighted the aesthetics of Multi-cultural education.
  • This program broadens my knowledge about the Indonesian Culture, Lifestyle, Tradition, Foods and Educational System.
  • This program makes me more resourceful and flexible as a teacher.
  • This program allows us to experience how the life in other country was.

1.6 SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE IMPROVEMENT

To the education system, I suggest that the students should be more taught and trained to communicate with the English language.
